WHATAROA

Settled among the seculded wilderness of the rugged West Coast, Whataroa is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the sheer beauty of the area. The town is small, with a population of just 350 people, and is predominantly a dairy farming area.

The town provides a base for trips to the White Heron Sanctuary - the only breeding colony of the White Heron in New Zealand. You can go on trips to the nesting area with a guide.

For the adventurous traveller, heli-rafting down the grade 3-4 Whataroa river can make for a fantastic day. When you get a chance to look up from winding around the rapids and rocks, you'll catch sight of the stunning backdrop of snow-capped mountains and glaciers, fringed by bright, green forest.
