The track can be accessed from the Chalet Lookout car park via the Glacier View road is on the South side of the Cook River. On the Northern side of the Fox River the track starts at the picnic spot half way up the Glacier Access road.
From the Chalet Lookout car park the track winds down well-formed steps to the Valley floor. There are a number of clearings along the way where you can get another amazing view of the Fox Glacier Te Moeka o Tuawe.
Cross the historic swing bridge and enjoy another spectacular view of the Fox Glacier. Then walk up a short flight of stairs to the Fox Glacier Access Road.
The historic swing bridge was built in 1929 at the cost of £1,200. This seventy metre long bridge was prefabricated in England and then shipped to New Zealand. It was then dragged on a sled to the site where it was installed. Strong enough to take horses and sheep it was the safe route south to Jaccob’s River for many years before the Cook River was properly bridged in the 1930’s.
